🇹🇼 How to apply to university in Taiwan

There is no central application system: you apply to each institution directly. Programmes usually start: September (main); some universities also admit in February, mainly to graduate programmes.

The essentials

Application system: None — apply to each institution on its own website.
When programmes start: September (main); some universities also admit in February, mainly to graduate programmes.
International applicants: Foreign students apply directly to each university; the national exam and distribution (UAC) are for Taiwanese students, and overseas Chinese and Hong Kong or Macao students apply through separate channels.
Language: Chinese-taught programmes ask for proof of Chinese (National Taiwan University: CEFR A2 or above); English-taught ones for English (NTU: CEFR B2 or above). Departments may set higher levels.

Your checklist

The usual steps for an international student applying to a bachelor's in Taiwan, in order. Tick them off as you go — your ticks stay in this browser, with no account.

1.Find a university and programme with Study in Taiwan's search, and check whether it is taught in Chinese or English.
2.Check that you count as an international student under the Ministry of Education's rules (nationality and residence history matter).
3.Get a Chinese proficiency certificate (e.g. TOCFL) or an English test, as the programme requires.
4.Look at scholarships — government ones and the university's own — before you apply.
5.Apply online to each university by its deadline and pay the application fee.
6.Check your results and confirm acceptance by the university's deadline.
7.Apply for a visa at a Taiwan overseas mission with your admission letter, proof of funds and health certificate.
8.Arrange housing; the university enrols you in health insurance after you arrive.
