Recipients are students who received that type of US federal Direct Loan in the award year — US citizens and eligible non-citizens only. They are not a school's enrolment, and they can't be added across loan types: one student can take both an Unsubsidized Graduate loan and a Grad PLUS loan.
How to read the figures
- Recipients
- Students who received that loan type at the school in the award year, counted separately for each loan type. One student can take both an Unsubsidized Graduate loan and a Grad PLUS loan, so the two columns overlap and are never added together.
- Disbursed
- Dollars actually paid out, from the file's “$ of Disbursements” columns. Dollars do add up across loan types, so the total per school is CollegeMatcher's sum of the five. Across the medical and veterinary schools, 79% of it is Grad PLUS.
- Who is counted
- Only students taking US federal loans, who must be US citizens or eligible non-citizens — not a school's whole enrolment. A school with few recipients may still be large.
- Where
- The island or country where the school teaches, from the code list and the school's own website. The code list's address is often a US administrative office (Ross University's is in New Jersey), and its country labels are irregular (Saba appears as “The Netherlands”), so neither is shown as a campus location.
Ross University School of Medicine taught in Dominica until Hurricane Maria in 2017 and has taught in Barbados since January 2019, so older guides still place it in Dominica. Ponce Health Sciences University – BVI is on the code list, but the loan file has no row of its own.
Taking part in US federal aid is not the same as being able to practise in the US. Check a school's accreditation status with its accreditor (for example CAAM-HP) and, for US licensure, with the state medical or veterinary licensing board and, for medicine, ECFMG. This page shows none of those statuses.

What isn't here, and why
The Caribbean governments' own higher-education data that we found can't be reused here. The Dominican Republic's ministry yearbook is all rights reserved; Jamaica's tertiary registers (JTEC, UCJ) are under copyright; Barbados's accreditation council allows non-commercial use only; the University of the West Indies' statistical digests are copyright; and Trinidad and Tobago's statistics office forbids commercial use. For Cuba, Haiti, the Bahamas, Belize, Guyana and Suriname we found no usable open data. So this page covers what the US government publishes — the schools in its aid programmes — and nothing about the region's universities beyond that.
