About CollegeMatcher

What this site is

CollegeMatcher helps students work out which universities actually fit them — on what they will pay, what graduates go on to do, and how hard a place is to get — using the numbers governments publish rather than rankings or marketing. It covers 56 countries. It is free, and it is an independent project: not affiliated with any university, government or admissions service.

How it works

Where a country publishes enough to compare institutions on cost, outcomes or entry standards, we built a matcher: answer a few questions and every institution — or, where a country publishes entry scores per degree, every degree — is sorted into reach, target and safety. The matching runs entirely in your browser — your answers are never sent to us. That is currently possible in 15 countries:

Where the numbers come from

Every figure comes from an official source published under a licence that permits reuse, and each one is credited where it appears. We check the licence before building anything, and where a country's best data carries no reuse licence we leave it out rather than copy it.

What we won't pretend to know

Countries measure different things — US earnings ten years after entry, French pay eighteen months out, Korean employment from health-insurance records — so we never rank them against each other or convert them into one number. Where a figure is not published we say “not published” instead of showing a zero or an estimate. And no one should read this site as admissions advice: check anything that matters with the institution itself.

How the site is funded

CollegeMatcher is free to use. It may carry advertising; if it does, ads are never placed on the quiz or on your results, and nothing you enter is shared with advertisers. Details are in the privacy policy.
