This page covers 17African countries with only a few higher-education institutions each. Where the country's regulator publishes a register, every institution on it is listed — 146 institutions on the registers of Cabo Verde, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mauritania, Mauritius and The Gambia. For the Central African Republic and Gabon, the ministry's site publishes no list we could read, so the page names the ministry instead. It shows names, types, towns, websites and the register's own details — no fees, enrolment or rankings.
This is a list of what each country's official register or regulator lists, as read on the date shown — not proof that an institution or a qualification is accredited or recognised. Check with the regulator before you apply.
Cabo Verde

ARES, Cabo Verde's independent higher-education regulator, accredits institutions and each study cycle (degree programme) separately; its course list shows whether each cycle is accredited, discontinued or cancelled. Towns are where each institution has accredited cycles in that list. The legal instrument is the one ARES shows for each institution.

Eswatini

The Eswatini Higher Education Council, set up under the Higher Education Act 2013, registers institutions and accredits their programmes; an institution must be registered to operate. Its list (updated 1 October 2026) gives each institution's status — provisional authority to establish and operate, registered, or fully registered — and is grouped into public, government-funded and private higher-education institutions and private and public technical and vocational (TVET) institutions. The list prints names in capitals; they are shown here in title case.

What isn't here, and why
Mauritius's open-data portal could not be read when we tried on 21 October 2026, so no figures are shown for Mauritius. No official higher-education list could be read for Chad, the Comoros, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Guinea-Bissau, the Republic of the Congo, São Tomé and Príncipe and Seychelles: we found no website of their own regulator or higher-education ministry that answered on that date. We have not filled these gaps from other sources, because unofficial lists don't show which institutions have closed or lost their authorisation. Websites are shown only where the register itself gives one and it answered when checked.
