Checked on 20 October 2026 against the official sources listed below.

The essentials

Application system: None — apply to each institution on its own website.
When programmes start: Each institution sets its own academic calendar.
International applicants: Students apply to each institution directly; applicants with foreign diplomas need an equivalence before they can be admitted.
Language: Mostly French; some private institutions list programmes in English — ask each institution about the language of teaching.

Key dates

The ministry and the universities publish no national application calendar; ask each institution for its dates for the 2026–2027 year.

The dates for the next intake haven't been published yet. We add them once the official source does.

Your checklist

The usual steps for an international student applying to a bachelor's in Burundi, in order. Tick them off as you go — your ticks stay in this browser, with no account.

1.Choose an institution and programme — public universities and institutes are state-funded; private ones set their own fees.
2.Check that you hold the Diplôme d'État or a secondary-school qualification that can be recognised as equivalent.
3.If your diploma is from abroad, have its equivalence established by the competent Burundian services, as the law on higher education requires.
4.Find out whether your programme holds a competitive entrance exam (concours) — some programmes at the public universities do.
5.Apply to the institution with your documents and pay its registration fee.
6.Ask the Burundian embassy or consulate about the visa and residence formalities for students.
