What it costs

Japan's 85 national universities charge tuition against a standard set by ministerial ordinance: ¥535,800 a year for an undergraduate, plus a ¥282,000 admission fee. Each may go up to 120% of the standard (¥642,960), and some now do. Public and private universities set their own fees, and no official source publishes them per institution.

If you are coming from abroad, don't budget on the standard. Since April 2024 the same ordinance lets a national university set separate tuition, admission and exam fees for international students on a student visa, outside both the standard and the 120% cap. Check the specific university's fees for international students before you apply.

What Japan doesn't publish

Per-university data does exist — the government-backed 大学ポートレート (University Portraits) database holds enrolment, admissions and graduate destinations — but its terms grant no right to reuse it, so none of it is here. The official School Basic Survey is published only as national and prefectural totals. That is why this is a directory, not a matcher: no per-university fees outside the national standard, no official entry scores, and no open graduate outcomes.

University Portraits holds per-university data but doesn't permit reuse. We'll email you if that changes.
