🇸🇴 44 universities · 14 regions
Somalia's universities, region by region — from Wikidata, not the ministry.
Most of Somalia's universities are private and were founded after 1990, many in Mogadishu and Hargeisa; the Somali National University reopened in 2014. This directory lists 44 from Wikidata.
Not an official list
This list comes from Wikidata, a community-maintained database (retrieved 2026-10-23) — not from the country's regulator. It may include institutions that have closed, merged or been renamed, or that have lost or never had official recognition, and it may miss others. We leave out entries Wikidata marks as dissolved or closed, but that filter is only as up to date as Wikidata. Only institutions whose name calls them a university are listed, so recognised colleges and degree-awarding institutes are missing. Being listed here is not proof of accreditation.
Before you apply, check with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education. The ministry's website showed an "Under Maintenance" page when we checked on 23 October 2026 (moe.gov.so), so check with the ministry or a Somali embassy directly.
The UN Secretary-General's 2025 report on children and armed conflict covers Somalia and verified attacks on 36 schools in 2024. A/79/878, 17 June 2025, para. 164.
Institutions in Somaliland are listed under the regions of Somalia (Awdal, Woqooyi Galbeed, Togdheer, Sanaag, Sool); this list takes no position on its status.

What isn't here, and why
Somalia's Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education accredits higher-education institutions, but its website was under maintenance when we checked and we found no list we could republish, so this page is built from Wikidata.
This list is from Wikidata, a community-maintained source — retrieved 2026-10-23. A university missing here is a gap in that source, not a judgement about the university, and being listed here is not proof of accreditation: check with the national regulator. Public or private status is shown only where Wikidata records it (2 of 44).
