Italy publishes what university actually costs.

Every Italian university reports its average fees to the Ministry, along with enrolment and its full catalogue of degrees. So you can see what students really pay — and find the 1,240 programmes taught in English.

State universities

€1,385

median a year for students who pay — €852 averaged over everyone, because lower-income students pay nothing.

Private universities

€7,272

median a year for students who pay — set by each university.

Taught in English

of 5,995 degree programmes, fully or in part.

Why every fee here comes as two numbers

State universities charge on a sliding scale tied to family income (the ISEE), and students below the national no-tax threshold are fully exempt. So the Ministry reports two averages per university: what a paying student pays, and what the university collects across everyone enrolled, counting the exempt at zero. Neither is your price. If your family income is low you may pay nothing; if it is high, more than the first figure. Each university publishes a fee calculator — use it before you budget.

Online universities

Italy's 11 università telematiche teach mostly at a distance and together enrol 302,187 students. Their enrolment isn't comparable with a campus university's, so they are kept out of the tables above.

Every university, by region

All 92institutions with students of their own. Italy's schools for advanced studies — the Scuola Normale and Sant'Anna in Pisa, SISSA, IMT Lucca, the Gran Sasso Science Institute and others — aren't listed: their students are enrolled through partner universities, so the Ministry reports no enrolment for them.

What Italy doesn't publish

No entry scores — most degrees admit anyone with a secondary-school diploma, and capped ones run their own tests. No open graduate outcomes — the main survey, AlmaLaurea, isn't open data. And dropout only nationally: 6.5% of students leave after their first year (2024/25, provisional), with no figure per university.

Want graduate outcomes for Italy?

Italy publishes fees and enrolment but no open graduate outcomes. We'll email you if that changes.
