Tuition at public universities

€726.72

a semester for most students from outside the EU/EEA.

At public universities, students from the EU/EEA pay no tuition within the standard length of their programme plus a tolerance; beyond it they pay €363.36 a semester. Students from outside the EU/EEA generally pay €726.72 a semester. Everyone pays the student union (ÖH) fee.

Of the 296,177 people at public universities in WS 2025/26, 186,022 (62.8%) hold Austrian citizenship, 69,926 (23.6%) that of another EU country and 40,229 (13.6%) that of a non-EU country. The universities' own counts in the table below add up to 325,077, because someone enrolled at two universities is counted at each.

By citizenship, in the ministry's three groups: Austria, other EU countries, and all other countries. The source does not say where citizens of Switzerland and the non-EU EEA countries are counted. This is not a count of international or exchange students: citizenship says nothing about where someone lived or went to school. Nor is it the fee split, which follows its own rules.

Student numbers are published per institution only for the public universities; each public university's page also has its students by citizenship, degree studies by type and field, and degrees completed.
